The delightful, intimate Dutch island of Bonaire with its 12,000 friendly inhabitants is an ideal getaway for visitors in pursuit of peace and nature, especially the peace and nature to be found below the surface of calm waters where divers can count on visibility of 100ft.

Ashore, Bonaire's passion for protecting the island's ecology extends from its white, pink, and perfect beaches to its 13,500-acre national park that preserves more than 180 species of birds and unique flora and fauna providing an educational and recreational arena for all Bonaireans and visitors to enjoy.

Real Estate in Bonaire
Bonaire 24 miles long (38.6 km) and 3-5 miles (4.8 -8 km)wide at its widest is a mere 50 miles (80 Km) north of the coast of Venezuela and 86 miles (94 Km) east of Aruba. Because of this southerly presence in the Caribbean, Bonaire is well outside the hurricane belt; a comfortable assurance for foreign real estate ownership.

Another assurance is that Bonaire is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with a government based on parliamentary democracy. It is also part of The Netherland Antilles . In fact the island has a Lieutenant Governor appointed by the Queen of the Netherlands. So real estate in Bonaire can be purchased with great peace of mind and full knowledge it is an assured and protected investment.

Slated for the future, The Netherlands Antilles is planned to be dispelled as a unified political entity and the five islands that form the Netherland Antilles will acquire new constitutional status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This restructuring however, will still position Bonaire as a self-governing part of the Netherlands and as an overseas territory.

There are no restrictions on ownership of private property by non-residents in Bonaire.

Upon finding and purchasing your new Bonaire vacation home you will require a notaris but not a lawyer. This is because the notari will take care of all legal matters; including due diligence. Notaris are appointed by the Dutch government and mandated by law to serve both the buyer and the seller. There are then three procedures to register property, which can take around 32 days to complete.

Because the reefs are so close to shore, buying an oceanfront property on Bonaire provides the opportunity to dive or snorkel right from your own property. One of the most popular areas in Bonaire is Belnem and Punt Vierkant where luxury villas are located at the Caribbean oceanfront... But the popularity for less expensive properties and buying newly built property is on the increase. In fact some of the new properties offer excellent opportunities to be part of a rental pool, with the advantage that when you are not on island, your property can generate income. This pool often consists of other house owners on the same plot of land.

The islands' economy depends mostly upon tourism, international financial services, international commerce and shipping and petroleum as well as salt export. Salt pans cover 10% of Bonaire's surface, and the island produces 441,000 tons (400,000 metric tons) per year. There is a 5% tax on virtually all goods and services, which is called the NAOB tax. The currency is the Netherlands Antilles Guilder (NAFl.) which is pegged to the US Dollar at US$1= ANG 1.79. Dollars are recognized everywhere, but most likely you will receive change in guilders. In regards to banking, Bonaire has a number of banks, all of which have ATMs located conveniently around the island. Currency converter here.

The island operates on 127 volt, 50 cycle. In spite of this most U.S. appliances will work however just a bit hotter.

Dutch is the native language of Bonaire though English and Spanish are also spoken along with Papiamentu, the local language.

Bonaire is one of the world's premiere scuba-diving and snorkeling destinations with the most prolific coral reefs. There are more than 80 marked sites, attracting divers from all over the world. The multi-colored coral forests that start just 20ft from the shore and often lie only a few inches from the surface are bewitching and strictly protected as the island's reefs are part of the Bonaire Marine Park.  Further out, the sea is rich in bonefish, tarpon, permit, snook and marlin for excellent deep sea fishing.
