Kingstown, the capital of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is the jumping off point for The Grenadines, a string of 32 tiny islands spreading south along a 45-mile arc. Some are well-developed but never crowded; others are little more than a lonely, unspoiled beach and a collection of houses. Together they all offer some of the best sailing in the world. With a population of 120,000, the country is governed by a parliamentary democracy having gained its full independence in 1979 and although with a history of French and British colonialism, is now a part of the British Commonwealth. The monarch of Great Britain is represented on island by a governor-general, and any final appeals are presented to the Privy Council in London. Another attraction: the country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines does not impose a tax on capital gains, inheritance tax nor income tax. St. Vincent real estate is also easily available and very much affordable not to mention the attractiveness of the nation’s lower cost of living. In fact the cost of living has an equivalent purchasing power of US$1,000 to US$2,689, as St. Vincent and the Grenadines currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (EC), with a standard exchange rate at EC$2.68 = US$1.00. Foreigner's buying property in St.Vincent and the Grenadines, as in most Caribbean countries; need to apply to the government for an "Alien Land Holding License"; which is a non-transferable license for the property and the applying owner. The process for application is performed by your lawyer; takes up to 10 to 14 weeks and requires a Police Certificate and banker’s reference. The application fee for this is EC$ 2,500.00 (US$936), upon ALH approval the fee structure is as follows: property valued between EC$100,000 and EC$2 million- Fee EC $10,000 plus 5% of value and over EC$2 million-Fee EC$105,000 plus 3% of value. There is also, the Stamp Duty Tax of 5% of the agreed purchase price (for both buyer and the seller). Obtaining Residency in St. Vincent is possible as anyone who owns a residence in St. Vincent may apply for residency and is usually granted it. The cost for the residency is approximately EC$ 1,900 or US$709. Visitors to St. Vincent need a valid passport including US and Canadian citizens plus a return or on-going ticket. Visas are required from citizens of the following countries: Dominican Republic, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, The People's Republic of China, Iraq, Iran and Nigeria. Getting to St. Vincent is done via the international flights to Barbados, Grenada or St. Lucia and then taking a connecting flight using LIAT or SVG Air (St. Vincent Air) to St. Vincent or via Puerto Rico and taking American Eagle to St. Vincent. . Tourism in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has grown; this and agriculture represent much of the islands economy. From tourists to high-end yachting visitors, to Caribbean real estate investors the island of St. Vincent has changed much since 1996 when in Kingston, the island capital, the new cruise ship, ferry and docking ports were opened and a new St. Vincent emerged. Investors saw and are seeing more and more opportunities for real estate investment and second home ownership. Agriculture in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is dominated by the banana crop, which represents 60% of the work force and accounts for 50% of the merchandise exports. There is also a small manufacturing and offshore banking sector. The main trading partners are the United States and France and SVG is also a beneficiary of the U.S. Caribbean Basin Initiative- where St. Vincent and the Grenadines has duty-free entry into the U.S. for many goods. On the south coast of the island are some of the most beautiful beaches in St.Vincent; on the Atlantic or Windward coast is rugged rocky shores with its dramatic landscapes; while the Caribbean or Leeward coast offers calmer shores and more of the island's beaches. All beaches in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, as in most Caribbean islands are public property and here it is up to the 50 feet. The country is divided into six parishes and forms a geographic wagon wheel effect to the island. The Grenadine Islands form a chain south of St. Vincent starting with Young Island which is a mere five minute boat ride from St. Vincent, to Bequia which is an hour ferry ride, Mustique an hour and half, Canouan three hours sailing trip, Mayreau and Tobago Cays four, Union and Palm Island four and a half ferry trip, to Petit St. Vincent at the bottom of the chain a five hour boat ride. These more popular inhabited islands are just some of the 32 islands and cays compromising the Grenadines, which is why sailing through the Grenadines is so appealing. Visitors can also fly to Barbados and then take a connecting flight to Mustique or Union Island or fly between St. Vincent and Mustique and Union Island on regularly scheduled flights by light aircraft.
