Once the Arawak Indian, who lived here in Columbus's time had been rounded up and shipped away, the Turks and Caicos Islands were left uninhabited until pirates used them as a stopping off point and Bermudians arrived to take salt to sell as a preservative. In fact, even whales, including the humpback, are found in these waters during the wintertime.
