The United States Virgin Islands are located close to 50 miles east of Puerto Rico in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of the four main islands of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, and Water Island; a most recent addition, and many smaller islands and cays.
The islands were purchased by the United States from Denmark in 1917 and are recognized as a United States Territory. What today remains from the days of Danish rule are the unique Danish buildings, Danish named streets and interestingly enough, driving on the left side of the road.
